women voters

By elections were held in NA-27, Lakki Marwat, on Aug 22, 2013. The seat was vacated by JUI-F’s Maulana Fazl ur Rehman. During by-elections in this constituency, the real contest was between Col. Ameer Ullah Marwat of PTI and Moulana Atta ur Rehman of JUI (F). The official result for this seat is yet to be announced because of the suo moto action taken by Peshawar High Court. The Court took suo moto due to the media reports which stated that women were barred from voting at some polling stations in NA-7.

Peshawar High court heard the case on Aug 28, 2013. The court ordered that ECP should present a detailed report about such polling stations where women were barred from elections and created a committee for the said purpose.  This committee was headed by District Returning Officers.

The case was approved for hearing by Supreme Court of Pakistan on the appeal of PTI candidate. The first hearing of this case was held on Sept 3, 2013 where notable lawyer, Athar Minallah clarified the position of PTI. The next hearing was held on Sept 10. The court postponed the hearing until Sept 13 as JUI(F) lawyer didn’t appear before the court. On Sept 13, 2013 Moulana Atta ur Rehman appeared before the court but his lawyer, yet again, failed to appear which lead the court to postpone the hearing until September 17.

Meanwhile, the committee formed by ECP released its report on September 10, stating that all the allegations about women being barred from voting were baseless and recommended not to hold re-polling. In case the court finds no need to schedule the re-polling at select polling stations in the constituency, ECP may announce the results from Aug 22 elections officially. Unofficial results of the Aug 22 voting show that PTI’s Ameer Ullah is in clear lead with approximately 63,500 votes bagged whereas Maulana Atta ur Rehman is a close second, having secured 56,000 votes.
